Caithness Beautiful scenery with a hint of Royal Excellence Caithness is located on the most north eastern part of the North Coast 500, and serves as the most northern county in Britain to still claim royal connections. The north coast of Scotland is spectacular and so are the self-catering cottages on NC500. All roads of the NC500 lead to Inverness. The Melvich Hotel | Dating back to the early 1800s, the Melvich now offers modern, super comfortable rooms - most with sea views - with plenty of thoughtful touches, helpful owners and a great on-site pizza restaurant! Located in Clashnessie, it is largely off-grid relying on roof top solar panels for most of your power needs. However, it's important to note here that several accommodation options along the route have introduced a 2 or 3 night minimum stay due to enhanced cleaning requirements between stays. For endurance cyclists, runners, motorcyclists, travelling from Land’s End to John O’Groats (known as the LEJOG or JOGLE route) , and therefore from one end of the UK to the other, is a mark of pride. There are quite a few accommodation options within it, but we’ve also included several before and just after it so you can still have that remote nature setting rather than be in the town itself. If you don’t stay here, we’d highly recommend booking a dinner. This small river city, the capital of the Highlands, is the start and end point of the 516 miles route, so it makes sense to have a night here at the beginning or end of your stay. The Glenmoriston Townhouse Hotel | A stylish 4-star hotel right by the river, this is a classy, modern twist on the traditional Highland aesthetic. Small rooms but good breakfast and well located in the village of Badachro. With perfectly adequate - albeit a little worn around the edges - rooms plus a self-catering kitchen, it's also pet friendly. Island View Glamping Pod | A good sized glamping pod between Durness and Tongue with modern facilities and plenty of space (including a deck for those summer sunset beers!). Ashcroft Bed & Breakfast | Unlike many B&Bs, this includes your own living room area and two double bedrooms making it ideal for families who don't need self-catering facilities but would like breakfast provided. If you're on the route for two weeks, this won't pose any issues, but you might find a place you love doesn't actually work for your itinerary if you're doing the North Coast 500 over five or seven days.
